Using Excel 2000. I have data I want to display in a line graph along a
single (x) axis. I have a series of 50 distances between 0 and 1 and
want to display them in graphical form. To show the variability between
each of the distances I wanted to draw a single horizontal line (min 0
and max 1) - ie x axis but no y axis - and plot each distance as a
vertical line along that horizontal line. This would grapically display
the distances between each point. Can't get Excel to do this. Can
anyone help?

Hi Phil -

You want a vertical line at each X, where X is the distance from the
initial point?  Set up your data like this:

0      0    Starting Point
0.15   0    Point A
0.25   0    Point B
0.4    0    Point C

etc.  The X values are the respective distances, and the Y values are
zero, so the points lie on the X axis.  Make an XY Scatter chart (not a
Line chart) with this data, format the series with markers if you want,
but skip the connecting lines.  Format the series also with positive
error bars with a value of 1.

Double click on the Plot Area, choose None for border and for area.
Double click on the vertical axis, click on the Scale tab, and enter 1
and 0 for max and min; click on the Patterns tab, and select None for
any options that let you.

You could use Rob Bovey's Chart Labeler (http://appspro.com) or John
Walkenbach's Chart Tools (http://j-walk.com) to apply the text in column
C as data labels on your points.

An alternative would make all Y values equal to 1, with a negative error
bar of 1, so the data labels would be along the top, and the distances
along the bottom.
