chart feature greyed out

What reason could there be for the chart button to be
greyed out when trying to create a pie chart from a series
of highlighted numbers?
It's a shared Excel 2000 workbook.

The chart button is one of the features that aren't available in a
shared workbook. There's more information in the following MSKB article:
