If it's an XY Scatter chart, this little macro works wonders:

Next time, arrange the data with the X values in columns or rows before
the Y values, then make the chart.

Thanks for yours hints. But as already mentioned, it is a
user-defined graph (combination bars and lines), and not a
XY scatter chart.

I very cleverly avoided fixing that mess. I'm afraid you're going to
have to do some combination of rearranging the data and rearranging the
setup of the user defined chart, then you'll have to recreate the chart.
But that means next time it will be ready to go.
