when you double-click an .xls file, Excel starts as
expected, but the file does not open. Does anyone have any
idea on why? Is this a problem within Excel XP and if so
is there a "hotfix" for it?

Hi Donna,

From the Excel menu choose Tools/Options/General and make sure the
Ignore Other Applications checkbox is unchecked.
