Okay, I am having a similar problem. Excel was working fine last week and
now this week it has decided it doesn't feel like it. I have Windows 98 with
Microsoft Office 2000 Proffessional. Strange it is giving me this error code
1706. When I try to open Excel it asks me for the installation CD which I
put in, afterwhich it tells me:
The file "Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium is not a valid installation
package for the product Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium. Try to find the
installation package DATA.MS1 in a folder from which you can install
Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium.
Then:
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Office
2000 SR-1 Premium. The Windows Installer cannot continue.
When trying to run the Microsoft Office CD I have (see prior) it says disc
drive not available, and not ready. What if I try to uninstall office and
reinstall it with this cd and it doesn't work after.

Hi Rhonda,
Take a look at the following Knowledge Base article and see if it helps.
Based on my reading of it you probably will end up needing to reinstall
Office.
