Using Excel 2003 SP2 and the prescribed methods in converting test to numbers
do not work. i.e.Copy value and Edit/ Paste Special/ Operation
(Add/Multiply) does not work. Is there a problem with this version?

Nope, more likely to be your data. Try running Dave McRitchies Trimall
macro against your data to clean it up, format it as numeric and then try
the methods you list.
