It was running fine yesterday.  I opened it this morning and could not open
any files.  When I tried to cancel, it gave me an error message saying "not
responding".  It asked if I wanted to send a report. I did so.  It came back
with I needed new updates.  I installed the updates, rebooted and still have
the same issue.

If Excel (and Word) have started hanging on File>SaveAs and File>Open in the
last couple of days, this is because of a problem with a recently released
Hotfix. it diesn't affect all PCs in this way.

You can remove it from Add/Remove Programs, where it shows as "Security
Update for Windows XP (KB908531)". Make sure the "show updates" box at the
top is ticked or you won't see hotfixes in the list.

Don't uninstall if you aren't having this problem as it fixes a
vulnerability in Explorer.
