I have files on my desktop and in a folder in My docs. they will not open,
but will open if I go to programs then excel and file open. they open okay.
Help??

It is caused by some 3rd party vendor shell extensions not being registered
with windows and this was exposed in a windows update last week.  You can
find the fix here

In Excel, click on Tools | Options | General | uncheck the
"Ignore other applications" box | OK.

If the above doesn't help, then close Excel and re-register Excel
in Windows by clicking on Start | Run | Open: excel /unregserver
| OK | Open: excel /regserver | OK.
