When I try to send an open document from excel as an attachement to someone,
sometimes it work. Then there are time when I get general mail failure. What
does this mean, and how can I fix it?

It means that Excel has been unable to open your mail client or 'post' the
message, it could be a busy network, offline, virus scanner, almost anything
to do with the mail client
