Excel 2007 Delay When Opening Files

When opening files from explorer (from the local computer or from network
drives) there is 30sec to 1min delay before the file actually opens.  Excel
actually opens but no file is there.  If I maximize the window, it then opens
immediately.

If I run excel from the start menu, choose Open, then select the file.  It
also opens immediately.

If I change the file association for *.xls* files to NOT use DDE (and pass
%1 as a command argument), it also opens the file immediately, but I do not
like this solution.

It does not matter what the content or size of the file is.  It happens with
all excel files of all file extensions.

I have all plugins disabled.  Office version 12.0.4518.1014.   2.0Ghz with
1GB Ram.  No antivirus.

Please help!

Followup...

I called MS Support regarding this issue.  Their solution (after 2 hours)
was to remove the DDE Message from the excel file associations (it had a
value of [open("%1")]  ).  Which is no solution at all.  Now the files do
open immediately, but each file opens a new instance of excel.  Because they
are each running in a separate instance, values between linked worksheets do
not update automatically.  You have to save the source file then manually
update links in the destination file.

Come on Microsoft!  That is no solution!
