I have a problem with Excel for 95.  I can
open the program, but I cannot open any files from the
recent list off the menu bar.  I get this error:
myfile.xls:  file format is not valid.  This file was
created in Excel for Win. 95.  I can open the file if I go
to my documents and open the file from there.  This is
strange, can anyone help?  I am running on Windows 98 SE.
Thanks for any words of wisdom.....

Try this:

Doubleclick on Excel icon...soon as it starts to load
hold down the SHIFT key (you need to press the shift key
as soon as you can after doubleclicking on the icon) this
will prevent the "startup" items from loading.  After
Excel completely loads...go up to the "recent" files list
and try again.  See if that works.  If so...look at this
link to delete the startup for Excel:

Let me know if that helps.
