Have Excel 2003.  Can not get the Automatic Subtotal in a list function to
work.
When I select a range of data (labels) within my table, the menu command
Data - - Subtotal is "greyed out".  If I select data on the same worksheet,
but NOT in the table, I can use the menu command Data --Subtotal.  I have
reviewed the help topics in Excel and followed each step, but to no avail.
My teacher has also tried to get the function to work.   Any hints?

Hi Carl,

did you try to use a subtotal in a Pivot table?
