I've been trying to enter a person's name (Liev) into the spread sheet.  The
system keeps "correcting" it to Live.  How do I turn off that function so
that I can enter the name correctly?

Hit ctrl-z as soon as excel changes it (ctrl-z is the same as Edit|Undo).

Or

Tools|Autocorrect options|autocorrect tab
remove Liev from the list.
