I tried to look in the sub menus to change this back to
Alphanumeric but every change I made did not take.

Any way to force Excel back to it's original settings?

Does this mean you see numbers instead of letters for the column headings?

If yes:
Tools|options|General Tab|uncheck the R1C1 reference style box.

Not sure if I follow you?  Tab?  I usually associate tab with worksheet.
Or do you mean column title?  Tools->Options->General and then uncheck R1C1
reference style.
