Why do Excel worksheets imbedded in a Word document sometimes corr

Sometimes worksheets imbedded in a Word document will end up corrupt - that
is, you are unable to make changes to it anymore.  It is more like a picture
then.  Why does this happen?

Likely the original XL document to which the table in Word was linked is no
longer available.
