Can columns be sorted alphabetically?  If so, how?

Columns cannot be sorted natively in Excel.

hi,
yes.
on the menu.... click data>sort
when the sort dialog box pops up, click options. at the bottom click sort
left to right.
as a regular sort keys on columns, the sort left to right keys on rows.

Highlight the range of interest, and click Data | Sort.
