Which Formula??

I need to create an excel formula that is tiered,in that when using drop down
menus, the selection you make will determine the  "consider list" for the
next cell.

Example: A1=1, then selection for A2 is A,B,C,D, etc.
If A1=2, then selection is !@#$% or something like that.

If anyone knows what this formula is called or can point me in the right
direction it would be apprieciated.
