if x then autofill a color

I want a cell to fill in a color if the result is positive and another
color if teh result is negative.

I can use the if - then function fairly well but I cannot figure out
how to get a cell to fill in a color based on the result.

How do I get this to work?

Try using Conditional Formatting.
