worksheet has numbers where the letters are on top of the columns

how do i get the letters back on top of the columns.  some how they have
changed to numbers like on the rows.

Tools > Options > General > clear the R1C1 checkbox

In Excel 2003 & prior, select Tools >> Options. On the General tab, uncheck
'R1C1 reference style'. Click OK.
