Hi Bob - Thanks for responding ... no macros in any of the workbooks that are
linked and Excel 2003 (SP2)

Ruth, one thing you might try to narrow down the problem:
For each worksheet in your workbook, copy it to a new workbook, and save as
test1, test2, etc. Then close Excel and re-open Excel. Then open a new
workbook and see if the problem occurs. Close the workbook and open
another, .... This may narrow it down to a particular worksheet.
One other thought: It may be a defined name that is a link to another
workbook. Before doing the above, press CTL-F3 and review each range name
by selecting it and seeing where it is linked. If it is a linked name and
you do not need, delete it. I suspect this is the cause.
