I'm using Excel to index several thousand gif files. When I create a
hyperlink to a gif file on my C drive, the link works as expected until
I save the spreadsheet. Then, the hyperlink is changed to relative
location, and clicking on it no longer works. There simply is no
response.
For example, the cell contains 980416521. The associated hyperlink is
C:\Project\1998\April\16_Rel5_Scan2_pg1.gif. When first created,
clicking on the cell brings up the scan with Windows Fax and Picture
Viewer as expected.
Now, I save my work, and the hyperlink is changed to
../Project/1998/April/16_Rel5_Scan2_pg1.gif.
Note the conversion to forward slashes, and note the relativization to
the location of the Excel file (../).
However, clicking on the cell now results in a no-op.
Help, please. So far the scans are on CD, so I'm working around this
problem, but I hope to move them to my C drive.

I forgot to mention: I'm using Excel 2002, SP2 on Windows XP.

Does it help to set the Hyperlink base (File / Properties / Summary) to
some unrelated location, preferably on a different drive?

Now that's an idea. I'll give it a try and let you know. Presently the
Hyperlink base is blank.

OK, I tried your suggestion. It works if I limit the Hyperlink base to
just the drive, any drive including C, as follows:
C:\
or
D:\
It keeps Excel's Save from mucking with the link.
This is a workaround, however. I think this problem is still a bug. Is
there a fix perhaps?

I currently have over 1700 links to AutoCAD files in my Excel database,
similar to what you're doing. Each opens AutoCAD, then the file. I've
never had the trouble you've described.......all works well except when MIS
starts moving Drives and Directories around............then everything goes
nuts.....and it takes a little wrangling to get things back to
normal.............but as long as everything is constant, none of my links
seems to change just by saving the file. (XL2k and 03).......if you try this
on a network, be sure to get in good with MIS so they will tell you when
they're going to change things...........<G>
