Seems like the only way to get the most current information from
linked cells in a sheet opened in read-only mode is to answer yes when
prompted about updates when opening the sheet.

If the source sheet is then revised, must I close and re-open the
target sheet (which I need to open in read-only mode) to get the
updates? Is there a way to do this with the sheet open in read-only
mode?

If the source sheet is revised in the same instance of Excel then you
should see the updates in the target sheet.

If it is revised in a different instance of Excel you can go to Edit /
Links / Update Now rather than closing and re-opening.
