Is there a way to set the default color for tabs on the spreadsheet. I don't
remember having to set colors for the tabs on the spreadsheet so it is easy
to see which cells are selected and which are not. I could set the tabl
color for all sheets, but I don't remember ever having to do this before.
Without coloring the tabs, how do we tell which sheets are selected for
group mode and which ones aren't.

OP could create a workbook Template with colored sheet tabs if running 2002 or
newer.
This would make all "New" workbooks with the colored Tabs.
File>Save As Type: scroll down to Excel Template(*.XLT) and select. Name your
workbook "BOOK"(no quotes). Excel will add the .XLT to save as BOOK.XLT.
Store this workbook in the XLSTART folder usually located at........
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
This will be the default workbook for File>New or the Toolbar button File>New or
CTRL + n
WARNING................Do not use File>New...Blank Workbook or you will get the
Excel default workbook.
NOTE: Existing workbooks are not affected by these settings.
You can also open a new workbook and delete all but one sheet. Customize as
you wish then save this as SHEET.XLT in XLSTART folder also. It now becomes
the default Insert>Sheet.
More can be found on this in Help under "templates"(no quotes).

I've found with some projectors that the tab colours show white, not
grey, in the projected image - difficult to demonstrate (to students)
that the tab colours change to white when you select them as a
group !! <bg>
Perhaps the OP is suffering from a similar situation on his monitor -
is there some contrast setting he could try?

The default colour for the sheet tabs is the colour of the rest of the outer
window.
If you select a sheet, the default colour of the selected sheet tab is
white.
If you select or group two sheets, the default colour of the selected sheet
tabs is white.
If you select or group three sheets ................ etc..
