I get messages about hidden modes when I open excel 2007. How do I unhide
whatever the software is having trouble with?

It's likely a PDFMaker.xla add-in loaded by Adobe PDF writer software

Thanks Nick. I agree....how do I get rid of the problem? Is it by inserting
the oringinal software and select Detect and Repair?

This may help.................

See KB article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307410

The PDFMaker.xla and maybe PDFMaker.dot are stored in your Office\XLSTART folder
or in the Excel\XLSTART folder.

Any files in these folders will open with Excel.

You must remove them from the XLSTART folder.
