Hi all!

I've noticed that this group has some very helpful experts.  Here's one
for you.  I am trying to import a scanned document into excel using
scanning software called Paperport and a Brother MFC 3420-C.

I am getting nowhere.  Is OCR some extension of excel (2000) or am I in
the wrong newsgroup?

OCR is Optical Character Recognition. It's a feature of SCANNING software,
not Excel. I like ReadIris, myself.

Other than Excel 2000, I am not sure what you have.  I will go over what I
can do.  You can try to adjust recognizing that there may be some functions
lacking in your system.

If you just want an image, in Excel 2003 you can just insert a picture from
Insert, Picture, Scanner.

For editable text.

I can scan an image from a Cannon LiDE 80 scanner into Paperport 10
{SP-1}. Then I can drag the image to the Excel icon at the bottom {or use
File, Send to, Excel} to start the OCR process and insert text into Excel
2003.  I also have OmmiPage 14 {SP-2} installed which can add to the
capability of Paperport 10.

Much appreciate your input, Don.. I think that's what I tried, but did not get
editable text.  Will try again.  BTW am trying to have the data from a
financial report placed in an orderly way onto the spreadsheet, not just a
picture, though that is something I'd like to learn too!

Mostly I use Paperport to OCR into Word.  For your post, I did OCR into
Excel 2003 and did check that the text was editable. As I stated, OmniPage
14 does add capability to Paperport.  I do not know the effect of that
addition to working with Excel.  Paperport 10 has a Help link to Sansoft
Technical Support. I have found their technical papers {free to use} useful.
Sansoft does charge about $10 US for email support.
