computing sums

when i try to autosum a column of numbers, what im getting is the formula in
the cell and not the sum. anyone know why this is  happening? thanks in
advance

I suspect the cell where you are putting your AutoSum is formatted as Text

The cell was formatted as text before the formula was entered.
Format the cell as General and re-enter the formula (F2, ENTER)
