=IF(AE22,"Row incomplete","")   How does the "AE" fit in

This formula is in L22, It references MERGED cells: D&E, F&G, H&I, and J&K.
If there is input in any but not all of the merged cells I get the row
incomplete message, but once all the merged cells are filled the message is
not shown. I understand the theory but where does the "AE" fit in to the
formula?

There is probably another formula in AE22 that calculates whether all merged
cells are completed.
