I'd like to protect certain spreadsheets using the Excel 2003 built-in
encryption. Just on a hunch, I Googled Excel Encryption, and discovered a
variety of programs claiming to be able to open any such encrypted files,
regardless of password complexity.
Is this correct?
If so, is there any convenient way to encrypt effectively?

Yes it is, Excel protection is very weak and whatever password you use can
be broken easily by anyone with a little knowledge and the will to do so.
It's not really meant for high security, more to prevent accidental
overwriting etc.
