The default (automatic) hashing is black. You have to go out of your
way to change the color. Do you actually see a different color.
Format, cells, pattern
at the top setting the color affects the background color.
at the bottom choosing a pattern allows you to
chose a pattern such as hashing and a color for the hashing or
stipling, you will have to go through it twice, once for the pattern
and once for the pattern color don't confust the color here with
the background color at the top of the pattern dialog.
I use Excel 2000, but I doubt that anything has changed in later versions.
I can see a definite cause for confusion, as it looks like the colors
are split for the top and for the patterns, but this is the normal color
palette consisting of two parts. The color palette for the pattern
comes up when you select the pattern.
