Chris,
Set up a workbook as you want it (margins, number of sheets, cell formats,
headers, footers, gridlines to print, etc). Now Save As, and change the file
type to "Excel Template (.xlt)" not (.xls).
Locate your XLStart folder, typically somewhere like "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart\", and save the file as book. Excel
will add the .xlt for you
Every time you open a new workbook from now on (you may have to restart
Excel first) this template will be used. To revert back to the original,
just delete this file.

Thanks Paul.
Also thought of another way while I was waiting for a response. I wrote a
quick marco to set the margins as desired and then put the code as part of
my auto-open macro. That way it happens automagically and I can also use
the macro to apply the margins to existing files with 1 click ease. Not
sure which way I will go, depends on if I want other options changed (like
sheet count, fonts, etc) that would be easier your way.
Thanks again for the quick response.

I'm not sure, but I think if you add new sheets to a book then they will
adopt the original default margins, which probably isn't what you want. If
I'm right, it should work if you save the file again but only the current
worksheet, and call it "sheet.xlt". Book.xlt is used as the template for
each new book created, and Sheet.xlt is used as the template for each new
sheet added to a book.
