When I ran Office 2000, I was able to type in any three
digits of a file name and hit enter for the file to open,
however since I upgraded to Office XP, I have not been
able to find out how to do this.

I would appreciate any ideas.

It's called "autocomplete", Frank. I believe it goes right along with the
setting in Internet Explorer under Tools-Internet options. Try that for now,
until someone else comes along who will likely have the perfect answer for
you.

Hope this helps!
