Why can't I open excel documents?

I have to click on the "New Office Document" , then open the file.  I can't
just click on the file and automatically open.

What happens? Perhaps you need to reassociate XLS files to Excel?

Try Tools / Options / General / 'untick 'Ignore Other Applications'
