When excel files are sent to me as an attachment, I want to open them in
regular Excel, not Excel Viewer.  I do not like Excel Viewer - too many steps
just to work and save a file.

Hi Joanie,
I would uninstall the viewer,  unless you have it because your Excel is Excel 95.
Then you would still have to check that you have correct options for Excel.

As long as you change your options,  the viewer and Excel should coexist,
it's just a matter of what you want to come up if you click on the file in Explorer.

Anyway the problem is in your  File Types
My Computer,  tools,  Folder Options,  File types
      XLS        change button,   pick  Excel
