Received e-mail states I need miscroft office XP cd, Do I need to buy this, or can I download the program? Crystal Is this message in the body of the eamil you received? Or do you mean you are trying to open an attachement that came with the email? If so, what is the extension on the the attached file you are trying to open? This is an Excel news group so I'll assume .XLS extension. Is that correct? More details would help us help you. What email application are you using? Hi Crystal, The instructions for handling the zip file are bit sparse, you can download Ultimate Zip, which is free, to unzip the file. Since you are being pointed to Excel in the directions you should be getting a file with an .XLS file extension. http://www.ultimatezip.com/ http://www.ultimatezip.com/faq.htm (Free for personal use) Since Excel is by no mens free, you might want to use the free viewer from Microsoft, which allows you to view the workbook, but not update it. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c8378bf4-996c-4569-b547 -75edbd03aaf0&displaylang=EN which is free for all users. The above link was obtained using a Google Search (on a search bar): site:microsoft.com excel.viewer could also have been entered with quotes around instead of period between: site:microsoft.com "excel viewwer"r If you have to update the file you *might* be able to use Open Office which is free and about 70MB of downloads between Open Office and Java. Thanks for the information Crystal. Sounds like the *.zip file contains two files, at least one of which is an Excel file. Of course maybe the person who sent you the file could send it to you in a format that you can read such as HTML by pasting as formatted text into a Microsoft mail program such as Outlook Express, or create an HTML attachment that you can read as HTML. Most email programs can handle HTML files If the file is under 100KB and is not confidential you can email it to me If you are on high-speed access you should install Open Office, if you need help installing these on you machine ask a friend.
