Have Excel display an error rather than rounding # to fit column

Excel can be misleading when it helpfully rounds your numbers to fit the
existing column width.  In most instances I would prefer that, for example,
the "##########" indicative of insufficient column width be displayed, rather
than an erroneous (rounded) number.

Maybe you could give the cell a Number format (as many decimal places as you
need).

(Number--not General under format|cells|number tab)
