When I try to open a workbook from windows explorer,
Excel opens with the top formating protion, but the sheet
dose not open, and all I see is my windows desktop.  If I
open the worksheet in Excel with File and open the
workbooks open fine.

Any ideas on what I should do to fix?

Sometimes one of these works:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

An alternative might be to do:
Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)
