How do I colour the A,B,C,D etc column tabs and the 1,2,3,4 etc r

How do I colour the tabs a b c d e f g etc and the tabs at the side of the
worksheet, i.e. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 etc

In xl2003 and older this is not possible.  You can only color cells.  Not
sure if it is an option in xl2007.

Yes you can, just place cursor on the tab and right click Tabs...and select
colour

Well not in my version! On reading the OP's question I read it as the row
and column headers *not* the sheet tabs
