I borrowed excel 2002 from a friend of mine so I could
install the program. It gives me a message of
installation incomplete.  Why?

Perhaps the installation really is incomplete. It would be difficult to tell
from here; that is just a guess.

One thing that generally works for me: When I want/need a program, I pull
out the cash/plastic/checkbook and buy a copy from a reputable source. That
way, I can return the product or contact the appropriate source for support.

Assuming it did install fully, how would you expect to activate it?

Your friend presumably has already done so and by lending it to you one or
both of you have violated any EULA in effect.
