Excel w/SQL 2000

I am considering installing Office 2007. I often work with and share exported
data from SQL 2000 where the wizard offers an export to Excel 97-2000.  I
usually do some minor formatting before I shae the excel data, so the
workbooks are saved in my current version of Excel at least once before they
are delivered.

Will an Export to Excel, then re-saved be useable by Office 2000?

Will installing Office 2007 add the option to export to Office 2007 in the
export to dialog?

TIA

My take on this would be to *import* the data *from* Excel2007. It has all
the options you need and the individual data connections show up in a
special area on the ribbon.

I do this all the time and it works well.

Be sure to set permissions on the server for you to access, but then Tables,
Lists, Pivot Tables, etc are an absolute breeze. I think you will also find
that formatting on the whole is done for repeat visits to the data :-)

Nick,

I'm not too concerned with getting data into Excel be it 2000 or 2007, one
of my questions is that if I do share a simple 2007 xls file, will this be
useable by someone who only has Excel 2000?

The other is somewhat answered by your *Import* suggestion, however there
are times that I don't have a user in Excel, I have a process in SQL 2000
that automatically spits out an xls file into a folder for someone to pickup
at a later time, kinda like a snapshot report.

I suppose that I'll have to install it on one of my systems and see if the
SQL 2000 Export Wiz. detects that 2007 is installed.

All should be well, as XL2007 is fine with 2000 files, so ordinary files
should be fine. If you format the 2007 file and save as an xlsx, you can
install the compatibility pack to *read* the file, much beyond that and the
users will be stumped.

If you avoid the conditional formatting, pivot tables and charts in 2007,
you should be able to save as 1997-2003 format without loss of fidelity. To
be sure, during that 'downward' save, the compatibility checker in 2007 will
pop up with detail of what will be lost
