Is there a way to Fill-Down or Fill-Right in Excel without affecting
borders?   I have written macros to do such things but I end up using
Excel on so many computers that I am compelled to see if there is a
simpiler solution?

Often I have a preformated form, and I end up having to reformat cells
because the border outline ends up either getting removed or copied
into interior cells.

Hi David,

With the Ctrl key depressed, drag with the right mouse key - you will see
options to Fill Values or to Fill Formats.

Norman,

I've not been able to see a difference with or without Ctrl when
right-dragging the Fill Handle.  I'd expect Ctrl to stop the incrementing
that normally would occur with something like Dept1, or a date.  Doesn't
seem to work.  And in the right-drag menu, I don't get the Fill Values you
mention (this is Excel 2002) -- I get Fill Without Formatting (which is a
pain for dates).

The only method to copy while preserving borders (at least that I've found)
is to Copy, then Paste-special - All Except Borders.

I had to share.

You are correct, Ctrl has no effect; it is merely a long-standing
misaprehension on my part!

I think that Fill Values and Fill Without Formatting  are inter-version
equivalents. More specifically,  with xl2k, right-dragging a series puts up
the following main context menu:

       Copy Cells
       Fill series
       Fill Formats
       Fill Values.

Just the functionality I was looking for.  I often avoid using the
mouse and am suprised there is not a menu option to simply select
between a default mode, but this is a great solution.

Thank you!

David.
