excel product program file ..xls

not yet a excel user I need the excel program and program file .xls.
my computer is a xp.  which excel program is compatable with xp and can i
purchase a small version of excel just to run the file .xls amortization
extra payment schedule.  thanks

Jan,

You can use Excel 2003, the current version, or most any prior version,
Excel 2002, 2000, and 97.  You can get prior ones from places on the
internet, like Ebay.  You have to buy it, or it's not legal.  Be sure you
get the full version, not the upgrade, since you don't have any version of
Excel on your machine.  You can also get a free viewer, for just looking
(but not changing) Excel files from www.microsoft.com.

There are free spreadsheet programs out there, too.

This is one:
http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD
