highlight the range of cells, right click on the higlighted area, click
Format, click borders. You should play around with the borders until you
understand each border button behavior. Set thickness of the line is on the
right. I normally do bold lines around the edge then in between cells I
usually go with a thinner line.

a good idea, but you can also do this from the borders dropdown
that you either have on the toolbar or can add to the toolbar.
It is the one in the lower right corner of the twelve choices in the
dropdown for thick box border, or the one to the left of it.
For anything more complicated than the choices on the dropdown
you would certainly have to use Mike's suggestion.

If the borders dropdown is not defaulted on the toolbar you can
get it from tools, customize, commands (tab), format (left), borders (right)
choose the one with the arrow to the right so you have the drop down.
You drag that to your toolbars.
