Bill - thanks for response.
I confused things when mentioning top left button I now realise, so lets
stick to top right, the centre button between _ and X; whichever symbol it
shows, the window is maximized; when clicked the title bar 'shudders' but
the window stays maximized even though the symbol changes. Also, when the
symbol shows a 'single sheet' ie sized (but the window is still maximised),
back to top left and click on size (not greyed out) then I do get the double
mouse pointer - but it does not change to a single arrow at the edge of the
screen and hence the edge cannot be dragged. Hope that is now a bit clearer
than mud! I am trying to avoid a total remove and re-install as I've just
spent some time altering all the defaults to my preferences and re-doing
micros having just set this all up on a new system.

Try this approach:
Click on the top left button, choose size.
Hit the right or left arrow button on the keyboard.
You then should be able to drag the right or left edge of your window
with the mouse.
It appears that your sized window has somehow been adjusted to be as big
as your maximized window, which is why your title bar 'shudders' but
doesn't change size when you switch between max and sized windows.
Alternately, see if you can position the cursor in the lower right
corner of your window, where it should turn into a diagonal double-arrow
that you can drag to make the window smaller.
