Is there any way to send a spreadsheet to a mail recipient in the body
of the message and not have the grid lines show up in the Outlook
preview pane when the recipient views the e-mail?  If you open the
e-mail in Outlook, the grid lines disappear, but in the preview pane
they are there.

Using Excel and Outlook 2003.

That didn't work.  The gridlines still show up in the preview pane in
Outlook.

When the spreadsheet is sent to the mail recipient, I only want them to
see the borders that I explicitly setup.  I do not want the gridlines
to show.

A very messy workaround is to format all gridlines as white colour and
then apply your explicit lines
