i have a column in excel that has people's names. i have sorted the
whole document to be in alphabetical order, by name....what i want is
to capture one entry of each name...so for example now i have something
like:

Code:
--------------------
   john smith
 john smith
 john smith
 john smith
 joe blo
 joe blo
 joe blo
 jerey james
 jerey james
 jerey james
 jerey james
 jerey james
 jerey james
 jerey james
--------------------

and i would like to get just one sample pasted to another sheet just so
i know who all is on this document.

Code:
--------------------
   john smith
 joe blo
 jerey james
--------------------

we are talking about maybe 100 names.

look at Data>Filter>Advanced Filter. It has an option to copy unique rows.
