To link data in one workbook to another workbook, must both reside in the
same directory?

No, but it's usually more convienient when possible, in case your MIS dept
likes to change the names of paths/directories..........

Just call out the entire path in the link........
Like........
='c:\yourpath\[Stats June.xls]Sheet1'!$A$1
