I am running Excel 2003 on XP. In C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office11\XLStart I have book.xlt, book1.xlt (my custom workbook)
and personal.xls. When I open Excel, at the top it reads personal.xls.
Shouldn't it read book1? Macros run fine. Anything wrong here?
Thanks.

With personal.xls the active workbook, hit Window|Hide.

Then close excel and answer yes to save personal.xls as a hidden workbook.

Is there a reason you don't just use book.xlt as your custom workbook template?

Then you could dump book1.xlt.

Books saved with extension of .XLT are Templates.

Templates do not open automatically when stored in XLSTART folder or any other
folder.

Book.XLS will open when Excel starts if stored in the XLSTART folder.
