How can I hide gridlines ONLY for selected areas of a worksheet ?

Nope.
But you could turn them off and add borders to your favorite areas.
(Format|Cells|Border tab).
Or maybe kind of...
If you apply a fill color to any range, then the grid lines in that area won't
be seen. (Fill color of white???)
