Page numbers display in the background - how to suppress?

I've inherited a Excel 2003 .xls and the Page numbers appear in large font in
the background as I'm viewing/working on it.  [they don't print].

How do I suppress this?

Bennie, your in page break preview, switch to normal, view, normal
