one of the cells in my worksheet appears to be locked and whenever  i click
on a  adjacent or far away cell, the range of cells between the locked cell
and cell whee I clicked get selected.  I have 3 worksheets in the file and
when i click on 2nd or 3rd worksheet, the title bar shows the file name with
(group) along with it.  How can I get rid of such automatic selection of
cells.  Control+A also do not work for selecting all cells.  Thanks

Hi

At the bottom of your sheet it probably show the word EXT
Try pressing F8 and that should clear the problem.

Roger

I can't make extended mode select the sheet tabs as the OP suggests? In fact
selecting worksheet tabs switches this mode off

I was referring to the cells being selected, not the Sheets being
Grouped.
I didn't think the grouping of sheets was related to the problem -
anyway you have told him how to de-select the grouping.

> In fact selecting worksheet tabs switches this mode off
Quite right, I had never realised that this happens when you click a
sheet tab.

Neither of us dealt with his other question, about Ctrl+A

In XL2003, you need to press Ctrl+A twice, in order to invoke the
selection of all cells.

It's a faulting wheel mouse, (or it's drivers)

When it happens, try hitting the wheel a few times. That may clear it. If
not try un-installing the drivers and re-installing.

Much of your symptoms are coincidental, associated with the 'stuck' wheel.
The [Group] is a feature of Excel where if you click on sheet tabs while
holding shift (for contiguous selection) or ctrl (for non-contiguous
selection), anything you then do on any selected sheets will be mirrored on
the others. To deselect, click on a non-selected tab or right click on one
and select 'ungroup'
